Traveling Video Crews: What to Expect and What to Budget

    Traveling Video Crews

Bringing an out-of-market crew into your city is easier than most producers expect. Here is what to plan for.

    Travel days

Most crews charge a half rate for each travel day. A shoot in a distant market usually means one travel day in, shoot days, and one travel day out.

    Per diem, hotel, and flights

Standard per diem is 75 to 100 per crew member per day. Hotels are billed at cost. Flights are billed at cost with no markup on any crew you work with that is worth working with.

    Freight and gear

Owner-operator crews travel with a full kit. Expect a modest freight or excess-baggage line item and no rental days on top.

    Local crew

Good traveling DPs and producers have relationships with ACs, gaffers, and grips in every market they work in. This is often more efficient than flying an entire crew.
